Selca Day, A K-Pop Fandom Creative Tradition

Have you ever felt curious when you see a hashtag in social media which contains “selca day” word in it? What is that about? 

Selca itself is a slang for self camera or selfie, whether selca day is basically a tradition of K-Pop fans where they take selfies and upload it with their biases photos, which indicates their favorite members of a K-Pop group/band, on social medias with hashtag combines the fandom name and selca day. Even though most of them use twitter for the place where they usually upload their selca days, that's why you could possibly often seeing the selca day hashtag trending on the twitter trending list, but fans also use other platforms like instagram,tumblr, and facebook. 

The Selca Day happens in the certain day of the month according to each fandoms. Every fandom practically have a different date to upload their selca day. For example, Army, the fandom name of K-Pop group BTS, hold their selca day every 1st Tuesday of the month while EXO-L, the name of EXO's fans, take their selca day every 8th of the month. 

The way K-Pop fandoms pick their dates for selca day has specific meanings for each fandoms. For example, EXO-L choose 8th of the month for their selca day is because 8th is the date when EXO debuted on last 2012, April. Army choose every 1st Tuesday of the month because they want to match the date with the airing of BTS variety web series, Run BTS, which used to air every Tuesday on last 2015. Even though the variety show has ended, they keep continuing the tradition of uploading their selca day every Tuesday. Another fandom, My Day, which is the name of band Day6's fans, held their selca day every 6th of the month because of the number 6 which forms their favourite band name. 

Meanwhile, this selca day tradition is originally began by Melodies, BtoB fandom, who practiced it by placing their selcas next to their biases' photo to show appreciation to the group. After a while, other K-Pop fandoms adapted it and it became the whole K-Pop fandoms tradition. 

Even though, selca day began with simply placing the fans'photos with their biases, selca day now has became a medium for fans to show their creativity. The fans now put a lot efforts to make their selca days look aesthetic by copying the pose of their biases, being poetic, or come up with a concept for theirs and their biases' pictures to make them match by using the same filter or match the background scenery. They can also get more creative by trying to recreate everything from their biases' pictures, including the clothing.
