Lately, have you seen a picture or video of coffee foamy drink while you scrolled up through social media like Instagram, TikTok or Facebook? That coffee foamy drink is called dalgona coffee. People started to make a video of whipping together ingredients such a sugar, instant coffee, and boiling water to create dalgona coffee, making it the new social media challenge.

The "dalgona coffee" challenge is a quarantine challenge that is currently trending on social media due to coronavirus anticipation. Even though according to MSN Lifestyle, the drink itself has origins from India, Pakistan, and Macau, where it is also known as whipped coffee or beaten coffee. The trending challenge started in January when it appeared on a Korean TV show called Pyunstorang where a korean actor Jung Il Woo who at that time traveled to Macau and tried the drink. He then gave the drink a nickname dalgona to resemblance the traditional korean sponge candy. Shortly after that, everyone began to participate in the challenge named “Dalgona Coffee Challenge”

Dalgona Coffee takes a lot of arm work as you have to whisk vigorously to get the right texture, and given people desire to make one. That's why the challenge spread fastly.

Dalgona Coffee is made with equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. The amount of sugar can be decreased to suit your own tastes. The ingredients are whisked together, you can use a hand-mixer or immersion blender or simply doing it in a manual way with your hand until the mixture froths up, then you can pour a milk and ice.

Dalgona is not like caramel, which is just sweet, instead, it tastes sweet at first then has a bitter finish, making it a perfect match for milk tea.
